The history of the Heinz von Heiden Arena

The Niedersachsenstadion was inaugurated in 1954. Designed in the shape of a huge shell, similar to the Estádio da Luz in Lisbon, the arena was the second-largest stadium in western Germany (after the Berlin Olympic Stadium) and offered space for 73,000 spectators. Built as a multifunctional sports venue, the stadium quickly became a symbol of the post-war upswing and the economic miracle in Hannover and the whole of West Germany. In the same year, Hannover 96 celebrated the German soccer championship, while the national team won its first world championship title.

History

In 1963, Hannover 96 finally became part of the newly founded Bundesliga! While the team under coach Kronsbein had previously often played at the Eilenriedestadion or the Radrennbahn, the Niedersachsenstadion finally became the 96ers' permanent home. For the decisive promotion match against Hessen Kassel, over 80,000 enthusiastic fans flocked to the stadium to support Hannover 96!

Partner

The stadium was renamed the HDI Arena. With the HDI insurance group, Hannover 96 has once again gained a long-term partner for the operation of the arena. Sustainability and economic success are at the heart of the cooperation. One thing remains undisputed: tradition obliges! Since 1954, the HDI Arena has been a permanent focal point for the people of the Hanover region and guests from all over the world and a real landmark of the capital of Lower Saxony.

Sponsors

From July 1, 2022, the solid house manufacturer Heinz von Heiden will be the new namesake of the arena. Previously, Heinz von Heiden had already been the main sponsor and shirt sponsor for many years until summer 2021, as well as a loyal supporter of Hannover 96.
