A look at history

Ice hockey in Düsseldorf is closely tied to the Düsseldorfer EG, which has been the city's sporting flagship since its founding on November 8, 1935. Back then, the DEG was established to bring life to the newly built ice rink on Brehmstraße. Initially, the sport played a minor role compared to more established disciplines, but it soon began to make history with its first games against teams from Germany and abroad—not least the legendary 1:1 draw against Canadian visitors, who were perhaps inspired by Düsseldorf's famous Altbier.

After the post-war reconstruction of the destroyed stadium, the DEG found its sporting home again in 1949 and became a prominent team in the Oberliga during the 1950s. The breakthrough came in 1967 with the club's first German championship, and the 1970s saw the DEG draw record crowds.

In the 1990s, the DEG dominated the league before financial setbacks necessitated a realignment. Today, the club looks back proudly on a storied history—full of highs, lows, and a loyal fanbase.

Review of the previous season

The 2023/24 season of Düsseldorfer EG was marked by ups and downs. On the sporting side, it was a challenging campaign, plagued by numerous injuries and a poor start. Under new head coach Thomas Dolak, the team struggled to find its rhythm and had to fight against relegation for much of the season. Despite great efforts, the team finished 11th in the regular season, falling short of the playoffs—a setback for the ambitious red-and-yellow squad.

However, there were also positive aspects: with a record-breaking average attendance of 8,905 fans per home game, the DEG set a new benchmark in the DEL, demonstrating its undiminished appeal. This level of support underscores the unwavering loyalty of the fanbase, even in tough times.

For the upcoming season, the DEG is planning with a revamped roster and a renewed coaching staff, aiming to compete for a playoff spot once again. Fans can look forward to an exciting 2024/25 ice hockey season.
